Jada Pinkett Smith acknowledged husband Will Smith’s Oscars slap Wednesday on the season 5 premiere of Red Table Talk.
As the episode opened, a statement appeared on screen about “healing.”
“Considering all that has happened in the last few weeks, the Smith family has been focusing on deep healing,” the statement read. “Some of the discoveries around our healing will be shared at The Table when the time calls. Until then … The Table will continue offering itself to powerful, inspiring and healing testimonies like that of our incredibly impressive first guest.”
The statement came after the shocking incident at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27, when Will Smith walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock for telling a joke about Pinkett Smith. The comedian said he was looking forward to seeing the actress in G.I. Jane 2, referring to her shaved head. Pinkett Smith has been open about having alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
Pinkett Smith previously posted a brief message on social media about healing, but the statement on Red Table Talk was more extensive.
The actress hosts RTT with her daughter Willow Smith, and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.
Singer and actress Janelle Monáe was their first guest of the new season and stopped by to discuss her upcoming book “The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories Of Dirty Computer,” and how it portrays the resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community. Janelle’s mother Janice Hawthorne also joined the conversation.
Other guests this season on the Facebook Watch series will include Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger and her daughter Ireland Baldwin, and the heartbroken parents of former Miss USA and Extra correspondent Cheslie Kryst, who died earlier this year by suicide.
